Gabapentin-A New Trend in Prescription Drug Abuse

FDA warnings about the increased effects of opioids and other drugs when taken with gabapentin has sparked a recent debate and research indicates a valid cause for the concern. When compared to those taking opioids alone, the risk of opioid-related death increased 49 percent among individuals taking gabapentin with prescription opioids. While evidence of the drug’s abuse potential and abuse rate will be an important factor in determining whether or not gabapentin should be classified as a controlled substance, providers are encouraged to become educated about gabapentin’s abuse potential, to inform their patients and to cautiously prescribe medication for off-label indications while being mindful of the quantities prescribed.
